Calle Joe Strummer in Granada?

  1. The city of Granada is considering naming a street after John Graham Mellor, although much better known by his stage name Joe Strummer, lead vocalist and guitarist of the 80s British punk rock band The Clash.  The band's biggest hit album London Calling (1979) featured a song called "Spanish bombs", an inspiration that came from Strummer living and working in Granada for some time. Strummer was fascinated with Federico García Lorca's death and Andalucía as a whole, and with his fame carried names such as Lorca and Granada across stages worldwide. The Clash's politicized lyrics and rebellious attitude had a significant influence on rock, and the band was considered a symbol of the contemporary liberation movements. Strummer, as leader of the group, always spoke very highly of Granada and some say he had a certain affection for the city. A facebook petition has recently been started and has gathered 1.600 supporters of naming a street or plaza after Strummer. Meanwhile, a formal petition to the city is being written up by PSOE city councilor and will be presented for approval.
