Christmas shopping in Granada

  1. Moving away from the usual high street shops of Recogidas, there is much more as well.

If it is christmas ornaments and decorations that you are looking for, the large marquee set up outside the Neptuno shopping centre just off Calle Arabial is probably the place to head for. All types of christmas and religious trinkets can be found as well a synthetic tree.

When buying a crib or figurines for a nativity scene make sure to keep an eye out for the incredibly popular "el Caganer" aka the red capped defecating character. While still quite new to the nativity scene and originally found in markets in Barcelona in recent years he has become a major hit and something of a necessity to hide amongst the animals and straw.

Another festive treat to enjoy is the popular “Mercado de la Plaza de Bib-Rambla” .   A fair that attracts the best “arts and crafts” from the region. It is also a great place to pick up last minute presents and stocking fillers. You can soak up the Christmas atmosphere wandering among the seventy stands that will fill the plaza and stop off in one of the many bars for something to warm you up. After visiting the stalls in the market you can sample the typical Christmas pastries of Spain, mantecados or turrón. The market will be opened from the 3rd of December to the 6th of January from 10am to 2pm and from 5pm to 10pm.

While it is easy enough to find synthetic trees in the various markets and even in many of the chinese hardware shops around town, the traditional christmas tree seems to be somewhat more elusive. If you have seen some "real" trees for sale at a resonable price please send in your answers on a postcard to Granada Insider.
