Ryanair - Rescheduled arrival

  1. The Diputacion (provincial council) says YES while the Ayuntamiento (town hall) says NO.

After the departure of Ryanair from Granada International last summer there has been a lot of discussion as to who let ryanair go? And Why?

The simple answer would seem to be that the powers that be would not renew the subsidy to attract Ryanair to fly into Lorca International and in typical Michael O'Leary fashion Ryanair had no qualms about moving these flights to the new terminal at Malaga airport.

Without a doubt this has caused problems for Granada's number one industry - Tourism.

Today it has been announced that the Diputacion is very interested to try attract Ryanair back, and most importantly re-schedule the direct flights from London to Granada. They announced that they are willing to renegotiate subsidy payments to the no frills airline.

However the Ayuntamiento (town hall) have issued a statement that they are against this move.

What is the difference between the Diputacion and the Ayuntamiento and who makes the final decision?

The diputacion is part of the Junta de Andalucía (controled by the socialist PSOE party) while the Ayuntamiento is a seperate locally elected entity (controlled by the conservative PP). It would appear that when both sides cannot agree on such matters that ultimatly no decision gets made, and the Andalucían reputation of lack of organisation lives on.

Still to enter the debate is the CGE (Granadino business association) who previously also contributed to the subsidy to attract Ryanair to the fly direct to the city.

This debate could go on for awhile!
